NEW FIRMWARE: GR3 GETS AUTO EXPOSURE FOR ANY FLASH

Ricoh has just released the V2.10 firmware for GR3 (V1.60 for GR3X), which adds an exposure mode—[GF-2 Flash Mode]—for flash photography. When an external GF-2 flash is attached and used, this mode automatically adjusts the camera’s exposure settings (aperture and ISO), regardless of whether the camera is in P, AV, TV, or M mode.

The GF-2 flash is a TTL (Through-The-Lens) flash designed specifically for the GR4. When used with the GR4, it automatically adjusts flash output based on the selected aperture and ISO. It is not compatible with the GR3 or GR3X. However, after upgrading to the new firmware, the GR3 gains auto-exposure functionality for the GF-2—though it operates differently. The flash output remains constant (similar to non-TTL flashes), while the camera automatically adjusts aperture and ISO. This adjustment is based on either the subject distance measured by autofocus or the distance set manually via manual focus, ensuring properly exposed photos.

This feature is not limited to the GF-2 flash; it works with any flash that matches the GF-2’s brightness (GN3), such as the Reflx Lab Mini Flash. For larger flashes—like our Limn Flash and Simple Flash—you can also achieve auto-exposure by adjusting their brightness to 1/2 power.

Below is how to enable [GF-2 Flash Mode] on the GR3 and GR3X:

  • Ensure your GR3 has been upgraded to the latest V2.10 firmware (GR3X V1.60).
  • Attach the Reflx Lab Mini Flash to the camera’s hot shoe.
  • Enable [GF-2 Flash Mode] through the camera menu.
  • When [GF-2 Flash Mode] is selected, the exposure mode indicator in the lower-left corner of the LCD screen will display “GF-2”.

A GN3 flash is adequte for close up photography (1-2meters). Here are some test shots.
